Nik,
Sites and the information held on them can be sensitive and the sites database is not available "on-line" but it is queriable by members if they have and give appropriate reasons for asking. Certainly sites officers are the right (authorised) person to be making such queries on behalf of clubs.
However the database merely records what the club wishes to hold on a site, it is for the resident club to determine what it wants to record. The basic data fields are Location, Grid ref, days in use and numbers expected, and wind direction(s) within which it is "usable"
And a "notes" field. Whilst it might seem a good idea to fill that field with detailed notes that might also be counter productive.
For Liddington the "usable" sector is recorded as 220 to 340. It might be worth reviewing that to restrict the entry to two distinct sectors. That can be achieved by the sites officer filling in the data capture form and marking the "amend" field. But that is a matter between them and Martin B.
Specifically on Liddington TVHGC site lore (as far as I recall) has it that the hill works best in the North West when the wind is slightly off to the left. this makes sense as the site is at the end of the ridge and wind square on will flow sideways around the end rather than up the slope and over the top if it possibly can. When the wind is square or starts to go off to the right more air spills round the side and lift is greatly reduced.
But, as we know from recent experience, as the wind moves more off to the left a more complex pattern of lift and turbulence develops as the wind flows both around the back, around the front and over the nose (across the quarry/pit).
The wind that flows around the back then encounters a hill and if there is thermic air generated in the fields below then lee side thermals are triggered and these create a flow from over the top to the front with all the currents and eddies that will bring.
All should bear in mind that I am merely giving an opinion as to the way Liddington works and it should be treated as such. I am happy to argue for it and be persuaded differently with reasoned debate.

Where is this BHPA sites list, is it online? I know the BHPA have a database of certain sites (hence the the site refs.) but I know Martin was in the process of updating this. It's a really useful discussion and indeed if there are changes to be put forward it will need involvement from Fiona (Sites Officer) and with Matt (Safety Officer) to help run through what's need.Nik.--On Thu, Aug 20, 2015 at 1:28 PM, 'Steve U' via TVHGC members list <tvhgc_members@googlegroups.com> wrote:On 19/08/2015 16:53, francis rich wrote:
For the benefit of those seeking some guidance as to what is flyable and what is less so, I have established, from the BHPA sites database that Liddington is registered as "usable" between 220 and 340 degrees.
This seems to conflict with our sites guide which indicates two distinct sectors of "usability", one facing NW the other SW +- about 15 degrees.
Please ask yourself where the figures on the BHPA database came from? Are they divine provenance, or did they, in all probability, come from the TVHGC, who passed them onto the BHPA at some point in the past?
Did the original BHPA template perhaps only have range of values for the site?
