Re: [TVHGC Members] XC Soar paragliding airspace file

Steve

There is nothing official or approved about airspace downloaded from that site/generated using that airspace file.

The only official documents are text version available from NATS and the CAA charts you mention.

There are errors in the electronic files and certain artistic licence in defining some of the more complicated shapes. Be warned, know what you are using and its limitations and leave yourself some margin for the errors in the shapes, don't fly right up to the line unless you know it is correct.

Also, for completeness, the same erroneous source files are used by Flymaster and Naviter.

Cheers

Great advice from Lee.

The CAA will expect you to be reading the official map. It could be the difference between a prosecution and a slap on the wrist.

There is an official site where you download an exe file, and you run this to generate your own custom file with the parameters you ask for.

Go to this site - http://soaringweb.org/Airspace/UK/HomePage.html and click on the AS Select option near the top of the page.

Run the downloaded file (Windows only) and make your own airspace. Not for Macs unless they have Parallels or Boot Camp, or those who don't understand the implications of what they are doing.

You'll see this - accept

That takes you to this:

Cook your own to your own tastes. Make sure you work through all the tabs.

David,

My advice is to buy a current CAA air chart. Then see how your open source electronic version matches up.

I have got a copy of the following airspace file, which appears to be the modified version for gliding that was mentioned at Nev Almond's presentation. Is this correct, and is there an "official" site where updated versions can be downloaded?

As far as I can tell, the modifications are:

MATZ are not marked
Only those restricted areas that apply to gliders are marked
Parachute drop zones are marked as danger areas.

Are there any other modifications that I should be aware of?

Thanks

David
