RE: [TVHGC Members] XC Soar paragliding airspace file

Might be a stupid comment, but have you checked your airspace display settings for class G?

Thanks for all your replies - I note that no one has answered my questions though!?

I thought Richard had a hand in creating a gliding friendly airspace file, so wondered if this was it, or where it might be?

I do fly with a printed chart (old school I know) but given the design of pod cockpits I  suspect most people now don't, or at least not in a place where they can be read in flight. Although required to carry a chart, I never got to the bottom of whether it needs to be printed or not - i.e. whether or not my MemoryMap device was compliant (provided the batteries don't go flat).

I have previously paid for Jeppersen airspace only to find that some Cat A airspace wasn't displayed on my Garmin, whereas it was displayed on Simon Headford's free file, so am well aware of the pitfalls. I was trying to avoid them by posting the above questions. I have compared the airspace file with with an airspace chart - which is why I listed the modifications I had noticed. Middle Wallop MATZ isn't displayed on my Kobo (the ATZ part is).

David, I don't know about the source you've got from the Airworks website, who produced it, why it was edited etc. so can't comment.  However I can point you at a source below which is used by most non CAA approved devices.

The sailplane source electronic airspace files are on Souringweb and these are the ones that are pretty much used by most unapproved CAA devices these days: http://soaringweb.org/Airspace/UK/HomePage.html.  There are always errors spotted and they mark certain airfields as class D which aren't on the map but each year official maps get compared but all in an unofficial capacity.  Certain people in the HG/PG community  have take the Soaring web files and alter these if  there have been any sailplane edits specific to them so we end up with other versions doing the rounds.

The up shot is unless you have an approved CAA device with air charts everything else needs to be checked with a CAA approved chart and flight plans & eventualities accordingly (as has been said).

Cheers,

Nik.

David,

My advice is to buy a current CAA air chart. Then see how your open source electronic version matches up.

I have got a copy of the following airspace file, which appears to be the modified version for gliding that was mentioned at Nev Almond's presentation. Is this correct, and is there an "official" site where updated versions can be downloaded?

As far as I can tell, the modifications are:

MATZ are not marked

Only those restricted areas that apply to gliders are marked

Parachute drop zones are marked as danger areas.

Are there any other modifications that I should be aware of?

Thanks

David
