The club September course may be better.
As a matter of interest my Dad owns a 3 bed house in southern Italy 5min away from the local flying site, as he is now 88 unless we take him he is not able to go there which is a great shame.
It occurs to me that with Ryanair flying there quite cheaply (depending on time of year) it may make a good location for a group club flying holiday.
The flying site can be viewed at Parandio Pizzo Calabria. There are a number of videos put up by the Parandio (Paragliding) boys who run a tandem operation there. I only know of the coastal flying sites which I have flown twice which was good fun.
There is an annual flying fiesta around Easter which all the local pilots attend. All being 20/22 pilots in that area.
Just an idea which may make use of his home, though I must admit I have not asked him if we could use it yet.

Hi Vincent,
I don't know if you saw it but the e-mail below might interest you.
Cheers,Nick
Hello
Sorry for jumping on this post! I'm helping organise the Fly Sussex siv in Turkey and we've just had a cancellation on the course from 15-22 April. We've also still got 2 places on 7-14 May.
Drop me a line if you want any info -jenni.fleming1@gmail.com
Cheers

Subject: Re: [-SPAM-] [TVHGC Members] SIV is not just for XmasHi Nick
I would be interested in going on a club group course, unfortunately April is pretty much booked up so any time later in the year would be good for me.

Hi there everyone, Happy New Year,
One of the things I wanted to talk about early on in the year was SIV training. Let's be clear, SIV is for ALL pilots at ANY stage of their flying career! I can't tell you how much I am a fan of conducting SIV instruction both from a safety and performance perspective and I thoroughly encourage you to book yourself onto a course if you've never done one before. You'll have seen from Mike's e-mail that the Club has arranged for a group course in April and further courses can be arranged if there is enough interest.
Let's not beat around the bush, it is a bit scary to deliberately go collapsing your wing but the controlled environment of a course with the dulcet tones of an experienced instructor in your ears is absolutely the way to go about it for the first time. I managed to go on a course in Sep 2014 after I'd been flying my Sigma for almost a year and I should have done it earlier! My experience was that it was great fun, I met a bunch of really nice people and learnt a huge amount about my wing, myself and about PG aerodynamics. I use the skills and knowledge I gained in that week every time I fly and in a few specific examples it has been of REAL benefit.
In the last year I've had three collapses while on full (or almost full) speedbar, one of which cascaded into a secondary full frontal collapse. That particular incident is worthy of a few words as I was just pushing forward on bar from Westbury White Horse near cloudbase on what seemed a fairly benign day and I suddenly lost about 60% of the wing; I came off bar and leaned in, preventing any rotation of my body but unlike previous collapses the wing dived markedly and reinflated with a snap and dived again. Now, that all happened VERY quickly and I watched in a detached sort of way with my hands remaining fully up. It was only when I saw my inflated wing level with the horizon in front of me that I started to actively pilot and recover it. I was expecting the full frontal when it came and after it fell back and reinflated behind me I checked the forward motion and continued with my flight. I suspect I could have caught the whole episode more quickly but it does happen fast and my only regret is that I didn't have my GoPro running to capture the event!
I've also flown in some real punchy thermals in the last year and from an XC performance perspective my SIV experience has given me the capacity to continue thinking about XC tactics and strategy in conditions that would otherwise have taken my whole attention.
I won't push one instructor or course over another in open forum but I will say that I would recommend you choose someone who will take high quality video of your flights, not only are you able to get a proper debrief and be shown exactly what you're doing right and wrong you will get a lovely keepsake to remind you of the fun you had. My video is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbb3lhY1pZA
I take my Advance Sigma 8 as far as my nerves will allow. An amazing week in Oludeniz, Turkey with Toby Colombe.
and I urge you to have a quick look. My main takeaway from this video is the second manoeuvre; it's a major asymmetric collapse on full speedbar and as you can see I lose about 80% of the wing and dive through in a fairly dramatic way. It is that exercise that has absolutely stopped me from trying to use full speedbar to push back over the ridge when low down; better to land and walk back to the front of the ridge than have that happen when you're 20 feet up in windy and turbulent conditions.
Finally, if you have ANY questions or doubts then just talk to me or anyone who has done SIV and I'm sure they can allay any fears or concerns you may have.
Happy (and Safe) Landings,
Nick Smith
