Folks if someone is next out on Combe Gibbet from Monday onwards when it opens can you flip the sign round from CLOSE to OPEN.  It needs some pliers.

RE: [TVHGC Members] February Social Meet - Swan Inn, Inkpen 4 Feb from 7:30pm

Just to clarify, Combe opens on Monday 2nd Feb and the social meet is on Wednesday 4th Feb from 7pm.  Sorry for  the confusion!

As Combe Gibbet opens for the season on 2 Feb (next Monday) I’d like to invite you all to glide down to the Swan Inn at Inkpen after your glorious day’s flying for a beer, a bite to eat and a pleasant chat about an exciting new competition that is just for us TVHGC members.  The long-term forecast shows the wind in the right direction, but the temperature might not get above 0C!

We’re back at the Swan at Inkpen for the foreseeable future.  For those that don’t know it here’s their website http://www.theswaninn-organics.co.uk/ and for satnav users head for RG17 9DX, 10 minutes or so south of Hungerford.  Meet at the bar from 7pm, grab a drink and some grub and we’ll hopefully settle downstairs.  If you’re coming by air it’s at waypoint TV44 below!

It has been suggested that we should have an in-house competition.  So I’ve devised one!  I’ll tell you all about it on the night and then it will be launched soon after.  You’ll need a GPS to take part (and a para/hang glider…) so if your GPS is gathering dust, clean it up, charge the batteries and bring it along.  I am far from being a GPS expert, but can get by with my Garmin 76CSx and the XCSoar software.  Here’s a little teaser to get the juices flowing.

See you there

[TVHGC Members] Milk Hill 27 Jan

Congratulations to the majority who managed to abide by the rules at Milk Hill yesterday, enjoying some brisk conditions in a top-end wind that was on the northerly limit for that site.  Hopefully the red ribbons who got blown over the fence in the bowl (where the wind is strongest…) learned that going backwards and getting dumped into a muddy field is not much fun!  If you don’t understand why this happened then please get in touch via private message.  However, if you do end up the wrong side of a fence PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB OVER IT.  This has been clearly stated many times.  Go to the gate and climb over at the hinge end if there is no open access to the field.

As seems to be the way of things recently, there always seems to be one person who cannot follow the rules.  Landing in the middle of the cropped field in front of Milk Hill is NOT ACCEPTABLE.  When conditions picked up everyone else managed to either slope land or bottom land in the acres of designated bottom landing sites.  I’d be delighted to hear from the pilot concerned, but from my viewpoint his decision to avoid those and land in the middle of an obviously cropped field was indefensible and totally unacceptable.

Follow the rules or lose the sites.  It’s that simple!

No worries, I did the same once I realised it had gone to the group email but it was obviously too late.

Hi

James Hope-Lang has kindly volunteered to take on the membership secretary role.  Very sensibly James is initially taking on the role on a six month trial basis.  After which hopefully he will decide to continue.

On behalf of the rest of the committee I'd like to welcome James on board and thank him for helping the club.

May 6 - Our own Chairman, Richard Bungay, needs no introduction.  Suffice to say that his many successes in world-class competitions make him eminently well qualified to talk about "GPS use".  This practical talk will provide essential information for anyone wishing to take part in competitions as well as for XC pilots.  Nothing beats pressing the buttons so we plan to do a little ground-based mini task exercise, with the goal almost certainly being back at the bar.  Bring your GPS!

Jun 3 - Various experts from the club plan to get together for a "Techie evening" to help advise on the best kit and how to use it.  Bring your toys!

More exciting events to be notified.

May 6 - Our own Chairman, Richard Bungay, needs no introduction.  Suffice to say that his many successes in world-class competitions make him eminently well qualified to talk about “GPS use”.  This practical talk will provide essential information for anyone wishing to take part in competitions as well as for XC pilots.  Nothing beats pressing the buttons so we plan to do a little ground-based mini task exercise, with the goal almost certainly being back at the bar.  Bring your GPS!

Jun 3 - Various experts from the club plan to get together for a “Techie evening” to help advise on the best kit and how to use it.  Bring your toys!

More exciting events to be notified.

Re: [TVHGC Members] Now Oxford want an RMZ...

Oxford, sorry London Oxford, has been angling for it's own class D for quite a while already with as yet no progress, so with RMZs being handed out like boiled sweets I'm not apprised they want a piece of the action.

Both Brize and Oxford proposals are being responded by TVHGC in the controlled way we have done in the past using a pack of documentation for these situations in due course, this was discussed in our committee meeting last week.   As I understand it Oxford plans won't make a significant difference to XCs whereas Brize definitely will.

We'll keep you posted.

Since there is not yet a planned size and shape for the RMZ it is hard to know how it will affect us. Oxford is 60km downwind of Milk Massif, so on a decent day with an SW breeze quite a large number of pilots might XC past it. Maybe dozens. If the RMZ closes off the corridor between Oxford and Benson that could cause problems - there is already a pinch point there, although Oxford doesn't currently cause problems since we are generally clear of it once we have gone between Brize and Benson (it is at Kidlington, somewhat further North). It could also be an issue in a Westerly from some Avon sites (Frocester).

[TVHGC Members] New PG event - Exclusive advance notice!

Due to the unprecedented number of TVHGC pilots who registered for this year’s Gin Wide Open (54!) and the fact that some have been unable to secure a place I have been given exclusive advance notice by Competition Director Brett Janaway of a second event to be held the week after the GWO.  Here’s what he said:

Finally, for all those that failed to get into the GWO, I am about to announce a new event for the week after, same venue, staff etc. It will be slightly different in that it is not a competition as such and it will be limited to 40 persons, with a higher entry fee. But it will be hosted in a similar way to GWO, but with some additional big names passing on the knowledge. I'll do a mass email shortly, but you may want to pre-warn the club as with just 40 places, it will fill fast!

Brett is also organising the Nordic Open (yes, with our current weather UK counts as Nordic!) in Gemona two weeks after the Gin Wide Open:  http://gemona-pgopen.com/

For other comps both abroad and in UK have a look at http://pgcomps.org.uk/
