[TVHGC Members] Fw: BHPA Safety Advisory - HG Landings

Dear hangdanglers,

Please read the attached. I’m sure that this will generate some form of discussion and I urge you to not reply to members@. I’ll post this on Facebook too so you can discuss to your hearts content.

[TVHGC Members] BHPA Safety Advisory - Unsheathed PG Lines

Dear members,

This will be of interest to a lot of you. As many of us have unsheathed upper lines I can only ask that you pay particular attention and report back (initially to me) any instances of previously untangled lines becoming tangled during in-flight manoeuvring. It is the intent of the BHPA Incident Reporting system to record any potentially hazardous events and trends so this falls nicely within that bracket. Please be diligent when you are flying, and note that the BHPA does not ask you to change the way you fly or restrict your use of big ears, accelerated or otherwise. They purely ask that you report any instances you may see, on any wing you are flying.

Kind regards,
Nick S

As for current results, the early leaders are:

9 Waypoints - Chris Williams

8 Waypoints - Harry Bloxham

7 Waypoints – Richard Bungay

There are over 60 waypoints to bag so no real advantage gained by the early flyers.

Prizes galore are provided by the event sponsor Cloudbase Paragliding.

RE: [TVHGC Members] Accident at Uffington

Update on Tommy's condition, from Tommy himself:
It has been a busy day being shuffled around JR (John Radcliffe hospital,Oxford), but finally I think I'm going to a ward. [Accident at Uffington] has broken both femurs, ribs, pelvis, back and neck; but I am still alive and kicking. If you are passing it would be lovely to see you.

Dear all,

I'm sorry to have to tell you that Tommy Abdy-Collins suffered an accident while flying yesterday afternoon at Uffington and is now in Oxford John Radcliffe hospital. While details are still emerging it appears that he has broken a number of bones and is currently in surgery. His family are with him in the hospital and have said that he would welcome visitors in due course as he's likely to remain in hospital for some weeks.

I'm sure he will be on Facebook soon so I'm sure you will join myself and the Committee in wishing him a successful and speedy recovery. I will update you with details on visiting once he comes out of surgery and is once again communicating.

Please, please, please do not reply to this e-mail but send your wishes through Facebook.

Kind regards,

Nick

Re: [TVHGC Members] Re: LAMP phase 1a

Caution, major sticking out of neck here...

Sorry chaps that I won't be ready to start on these changes until next week. But in in the meantime, I've had a look through and as far as I can tell the route from Combe SE to the coast/Brighton is not materially affected. There is some consolidation of LTMA areas, introduction of Portsmouth CTA etc, but lateral and vertical limits along that route at first glance appear unaffected. Don't take my word for it though. Visit the NATS AIS website and download a copy of AIC Y076(2015) for yourselves.

[TVHGC Members] Ozone Chabre Open 2016 - Rego Opens 21st Feb

Folks,

Just to let you know that registration of the Chabre Open, the best fun competition, opens on 21st February 18:00.

The comp filled in mins last year so you will need to register and pay by PayPal quickly. You will need details of your glider (including serial no if ozone), flying experience and emergency contact ready to complete the form.

If you want to make sure that your equipment is ready for the flying season bookings are open for the club's safety and repack event.

Hope to see you there and at the Big Fat Repack.

All the best,

Chris

Subject: Ozone Chabre Open 2016 - Rego Opens 21st Feb

Dear Pilots

Get ready!  It's just  two weeks to online registration for the 2016 Ozone Chabre Open.  Registration opens at www.flylaragne.com at 18.00 GMT (that's 19.00 central European time) on Sunday 21st February.

Planning for the 11th edition (2nd to 8th July) is already well under way at this end.  While we are following our successful formula of fun flying in a learning environment, we have some innovations too.  (See later)

Our 2016 entry is limited, as usual, to 125 pilots.  Unchanged from last year, the cost is 240 euros for pilots not flying at Ozone wing, and 220 euros for those on an Ozone glider.

Payment is by PayPal ONLY – please check your account before hand!  You will be prompted to pay immediately to confirm your place, if you do not do so you will be placed on the waiting list.

Once the competition is full, the payment page will be closed, and pilots registering after this will be automatically placed on the waiting list.  We will contact you later, if a place becomes available.

New for 2016, we have introduced a new 'Fun' class, alongside our regular Recreation, Sport and X Classes. Also, classes this year will be determined by rating and aspect ratio (AR) of pilots' wings rather than just EN rating. We feel this is fairer. Full details are on the website, but essentially, Fun class is EN B or below with an AR of 5.2 or less.  Recreation is EN B or below and AR of 5.3 to 5.7.  Sport is EN C or below and AR of 5.8 to 6.3.  And X-Class is EN D or below and AR greater than 6.3.

Of course, we still have Rookies and Women's classes for extra prizes!

Physical registration will be on Friday 1st July, with a practice task planned for Saturday 2nd July.  First full competition day will be Sunday 3rd July.  Check out the website for the full rules, programme for the week and information on accommodation and flying in the area.  See also our Facebook page at Flylaragne.

Cross Country Magazine

Prepare your kit ready for the coming season.

Pre-season Preparation

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, we're just coming through the last weeks of what's felt like a VERY long winter. But February is a great month to get ready for the flying season. Over the next few Fridays we'll be sending you some prompts to help you prepare so you can just turn up, clip in and spec out on the first epic day of the spring season.

This week, it's all about getting your kit sorted. See if you can cross these off your list.

  • Book your reserve in for its annual repack
  • Sort out those niggles you have with your harness
  • Check your wing's line lengths, or get a service centre to do it for you
  • Buy some energy bars and isotonic drinks ready for the first day
  • Get your warm-weather gear out and sorted, including heated gloves
  • If you're a paramotor pilot and your engine is in hibernation, then February is the month for a service

After a winter lay-off, you're not going to be on top of your game and spring thermals can be hectic. So stick with what's familiar, and don't rush into changing your gear at this stage. Forget all the hype about new wings. Relax and enjoy what you've got for now.

Next week, we'll be thinking about setting some goals for the season. But for now – get crossing that list off!

Enjoy the weekend!

Re: [TVHGC Members] First Aid Course

Thanks Marcus
I just said Liddington so people would know roughly where the course would be i.e. near the flying site.

The hall we are using is in Hinton Parva. I did ask Liddington but their hall was only available one of the days.

Best wishes
Francis

[TVHGC Members] Club Meeting tonight - ALL INVITED!

I know your googlegroup mailboxes must be full to overflowing with recent messages, but here’s another one.  Hopefully of relevance to most of us…

(apologies if you’ve seen this on Faceache already)

Venue:  The Swan Inn, Inkpen (bottom of Combe)  RG17 9DX
Time:  WILL start at 8pm and will try to finish by 10pm.

Food:  Available at the bar from 7pm

Ok, so the forecast proved to be correct, so not great for a long day's soaring at the newly re-opened (yesteday!) Combe Gibbet, so why not come along to the first social event of the year instead?!  It's a chance to catch up with your mates, compare paragliding resolutions and start thinking about the thermal flying season that is just around the corner. We'll start with a look at the TVHGC Sites Competition and do what needs to be done to get everyone up and running. If you want help putting comp waypoints into your GPS then bring it, along with its cable and a laptop if you're able to. Then we'll have a quick look at any of the Winter Quiz answers that are still puzzling you before we repair to the bar for a well-earned rest.

See you there!

Re: [TVHGC Members] Re: Agenda Item 3 Update

Can you two just get a room please? :-)

Seriously, I'm just glad someone reads those green voting slips, can't say I ever have!

I totally agree with your reasoned approach to the problem of the measured and accountable implementation of the power to exclude a member and will support any resolution to that effect.

I am also grateful to you for taking the time to clarify the BHPA structure for me. I think I am not the right person to ask Marc the question that I posed (my wording often alarms and offends without being intended to do so)but, like you I would very much like to know the answer particularly as it would inform the wording of any resolution to control the use of the power. Perhaps best left until after the vote to see what steps may be necessary or desirable.

I am rather alarmed that you think "troublesome members" should be removed from the membership. I worry you would put me in that category and would be glad of a draconian power to see the back of me. Can you define what actions a person would have undertaken that would so classify him? Surely not for expressing opinions on a club forum? Perhaps autistic members would be regarded as troublesome for expressing opinions in a socially inept way? Do, please, clarify.

To clarify:

I have not put you, Francis, in any category. I don't have that right, nor am I that presumptuous.

I regard the power as draconian, and that is a negative adjective for me. I have clarified already that such a power should be carefully controlled with checks and balances. Currently in two situations is it not, and a third situation is proposed to be added to that at the AGM. This is purely a personal opinion. I would never be glad of draconian powers. However, they already exist, and I'm against them.

As I said before, it's my intention to carefully research an alternative proposal, if I don't get tired of association politics. I wouldn't be looking to define actions or anything else, or clarify what constitutes troublesome or bringing the association into disrepute. I'd leave that to Exec. All I'd be looking to do would be to provide the route of appeal or arbitration suggested either here or FB by Andrew Craig.

I don't think Marc is a member of the TVHGC, or reads this mailing list. I'd be interested to read his reply, if he gave one.

Hope this clarifies things.

[TVHGC Members] RETRACTION

Yesterday I posted on this email group the following statement:
"I have been following Steve's exploration of this matter with Marc Asquith on the facebook page UK Paramotor XC and would like to ask a question,"

I acknowledged that it is not true that Steve has ever posted anything on a facebook group called UK Paramotor XC. I wish to express my heartfelt apologies for any distress or embarrassment that my false statement may have caused Steve or his friends and associates by implying that Steve has or has had any social, pastoral or professional relationship with a paramotor community.

Steve, I disagree with your view that the power is "draconian". It is necessary and the proposal merely adds renewing members to the already covered classes of applicant.
I do feel though that the lack of declared implementation policy to accompany the propoasl and guide the use of the power permits its implementation to be "draconian"

So we seem to be agreed on that?

I am rather alarmed that you think "troublesome members" should be removed from the membership. I worry you would put me in that category and would be glad of a draconian power to see the back of me. Thanks for clearing that up Steve.
My understanding was wrong. I hoped it would be.
The BHPA Ltd is one company that deals with the admin of the head office but there is another company called the British hang Gliding and Paragliding Association Ltd whose nature of Business is "Activities of other membership organisations not elsewhere classified" and whose directors are the members of the Executive Council and which change as those members change. That makes a lot more sense.

So I need to restructure my question to include a further entity.

Perhaps this ?:

Marc Asquith explained that it has been established in court that there is a "freedom to associate and a freedom not to associate".
He also referred to a number of entities:

1. The BHPA Ltd (A company limited by guarantee, registered at companies house as having the  nature of business Activities of Head Offices)
2. Its Directors (registered as 3 individuals who are estate agents from Nottingham and who are the only shareholders and who are not BHPA members)
3. the  British hang Gliding and Paragliding Association Ltd whose nature of Business is "Activities of other membership organisations not elsewhere classified"
4. The Executive Council (11 BHPA members, whom are directors of the company in entity 3)
5. The members (the rest of us).

If I have now understood the structure correctly can Marc explain which of these entities (in the context of this proposed amendment to the Articles of Association)  seeks the "freedom not to associate" and which other of these entities they are seeking to have the freedom not to associate with?

Steve, I disagree with your view that the power is "draconian".

Hi Francis,

I think you'll find you're very slightly off the mark with regard to the BHPA.

Maybe you should look here:

https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/02618166

Directors correctly listed:

https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/02618166/officers

Maybe on this basis you may consider a retraction?

With the following, please bear in mind I'm not a lawyer (IANAL - lovely acronym). I'm just using common sense with minimal research.

As I understand it, the reason to choose the Limited Company model has to do with liability. A company limited by guarantee has been chosen as it is the best way to avoid the association being rendered insolvent, with heavy member financial burdens, as the BHGA came close to after a financial hiccup in the 1990s.

The ability to remove a troublesome member is something that is unpleasant but necessary, in my view.

What we can't have, is such draconian powers without any checks or balances. The same small group can't be judge, jury and executioner.

I'm lead to believe that as a member of FAI, the BHPA would be bound by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.  http://www.tas-cas.org/en/index.html  However, I need to research this, and would look to propose an amendment to the constitution next year.

Also, the group I posted on is UK Paragliding XC news, https://www.facebook.com/groups/311219245657721/, not UK Paramotor XC. I am not on UK Paramotor XC.

My current understanding of his explanations so far is that it is the Directors who seek the freedom not to associate their Company, BHPA Ltd, with any of the members applying to renew membership, in the same way that they already have the freedom not to associate with new applicants and lapsed applicants under the existing Articles.

If this understanding is correct then it is those three (non-BHPA member) estate agents from Nottingham who would be declining to renew our memberships, based on a recommendation by a majority of the members of the Executive present at their meeting, convened under the Articles, to determine an application. This could be as few as 2 members present, as according to those Articles.

On Mon, Feb 1, 2016 at 8:20 AM, francis rich <francis@jfdiuk.com> wrote:
The issue has been debated in several places. The BHPA Chairman Marc Asquith has given some explanations.
Crucially he states that the law allows that people have the right to associate and the right not to associate. He also explains that the BHPA is a company not a democracy and that the directors act for the company under the companies Act.

The directors of the Company BHPA Ltd are two estate agents from Notingham according to companies house. None of teh Executive are listed as directors.

What is not clear is who the Executive council are making the decision whether to associate or not associate with an individual member FOR.

Do they decide not to allow the association of a member with the other members? Or not to associate with the Company (on behalf of the Directors)?

I would happily vote it in if it were the former but definitely not the latter. The former implies that anu=y decision to exclude must only be a recommendation and the membership  must have the final word (an appeal to them). The latter implies that the membership must do as the Directors say.

I hope this question can be answered before the vote.
