OK - here's one in return. I'm an experienced pilot (200 hours+) and have a dislike of doing 360s too low down. One thermic day I was about 100' above the hill and about the same out front too, so I felt 'safe' doing a 360. Entering a thermal I decided to do a 360 to stay in it but 90 degrees into the turn I started sinking very fast (i.e. I fell out of the back of the thermal). Because the turn was well established I didn't want to stop or reverse the turn because of the danger of hitting the hill. I barely missed the crest of the hill - possibly by as little as 2 feet.
-- It was a close call.
Lesson learnt - give yourself a bigger margin before doing 360s near to the hill and if entering a thermal give it a bit more time before turning. Obvious in hindsight.
