Hi All

Another reminder:

Don't forget the social tomorrow night with Nev Almond talking about Kobo/XC Soar... bring them along and I am sure you have loads of questions!!

Socials coming up:
May - Richard Bungay helping us with GPS and programming them

June - We have the pleasure of Lee Tryhorn from Free Flight Academy doing a talk for us on acro flying and a session on theoretical SIV at the June social. Lee is a passionate acro pilot and will give us an insight to the side of paragliding that most of only watch from the side of the hill and wonder what is going through the pilots mind! SIV has stigma attached to it, can be costly and is quite scary to think about (for most of us), however, Lee will try to dispell some of that for us

[TVHGC Members] TVHGC 2015/16 Membership Renewal Reminder - Your 2014/15 Membership expires tonight!

Hello Thames Valley pilots (current and lapsing…),

Many thanks to the 153 of you who have renewed for the 2015/16 season - confirmation emails and helmet stickers will be on their way over the next few days.

However I'm left with 340 or so members who are automatically going to lapse from April 1st. Whilst I appreciate the outlook for the next few days is fairly poor please remember you must have either the annual TVHGC membership or the 7 day pass to fly our sites once the good weather returns. Pilots not displaying the helmet sticker can expect to be challenged this season as a result of some incidents over the last year.

As a reminder I've included the joining instructions below from my previous email:

Spring is just around the corner, which means it's time to dust off your flying kit and renew your TVHGC membership before it expires on 1st April. If you would like to re-join for the 2015/16 season please click on the link below and choose between online renewal or to send a cheque and form through the post:

http://tvhgc.co.uk/index.php/join-the-club/joiners-or-nenewals

We've kept the data gathering to a bare minimum and I'm sure you'll appreciate that we've also kept the subscription at just £20 again this year. However we are also asking members to donate to an Air Ambulance fund via an option on the payment page. The money raised will be divided between Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

For the 2015/16 season we have also introduced helmet stickers. These will be sent out during April and we will be checking for them on the hillside so please ensure you have it on your helmet, or carry evidence of your membership.

Regards,

James Hope-Lang
TVHGC Membership Secretary

PS This is a club-wide mailshot, so if you've already renewed for 2015/16, are a new member who joined after 1st Oct 2014 or entitled to a free year, just ignore this reminder (though a helmet sticker will still be sent to you).

[TVHGC Members] Telegram use

If you’re already on Telegram please remind yourself of the easy-to-follow rules that benefit us all (below).
If you’re not on Telegram, but would like to be, read on:

Telegram is an app that enables messages to be shared securely within a group.  We’ve got 2 groups:  TVHGC Site Reports and TVHGC XC Group.  When you send a message it is shared with all the group members – hundreds of us!  Please note; the groups are not called Idle Chat group or Banter Your Mates group.  Nuff said.  Please use other clubs’ groups for non-TVHGC sites and the usual forums etc for other stuff.

Here’s how to join in:

1.  Download Telegram https://telegram.org/
2.  Run through the joining procedure with your first and last names (no pseudonyms please) and mobile number with international code
3.  Enter the code that will be sent to you
4.  Send me an email or text including:

  • your first and last names
  • your mobile number
  • which group(s) you’d like to join

A few guidelines to keep us on track:

RULE 1:  Include the site you are at.  When you post please add all relevant information so that others can make a decision on whether or not to join you.  Essential information often missed is where you are!

RULE 2:  Keep it brief and relevant.  e.g.  “Milk Hill, light SW wind, thermic, 3 wings airborne, 2 gone xc” or “Combe, fog, lots waiting, rain just started, don’t bother!”

RULE 3:  Be nice!  Please be polite etc

RULE 4:  No Rule 4 (Monty Python references limited to this rule only)

RULE 5:  This group is open to anyone, not just TVHGC members, as long as, if they post a message, they are a reliable source of relevant information.  Remember though that you need to be a TVHGC member to fly our sites  http://www.tvhgc.co.uk/index.php/join-the-club

RULE 6:  Please feel free to add new members, but only if Rule 5 applies.

RULE 7:  No chat!  See Rule 2

RULE8:  If you don’t like the rules don’t join!  Persistent rule breakers will be deleted from the group.

Thank you!

Re: [TVHGC Members] Hello everyone

Hi Purna
I also live in Feltham. Keep me posted when you want to fly and we can sort something out.

May also be worth joining sky surfers as their sites are actually closer to us and it gives you a nice choice.

Re: [TVHGC Members] TVHGC 2015/16 Membership Renewal

sadly my all too brief paragliding career has to come to an end so won't be rejoining this year. Hope everyone has a really good year and will look up enviously when I see any wings in the air!

Re: [TVHGC Members] Re: Nexus 7

Hi

Thanks for the info.  I already have one for normal tablet use. Looks like it's worth a try then :)

I've recently had a problem with it and not sure of the cause.  I broke the screen by dropping it in the car, and by the time I'd replaced the screen I had an automatic download of a new android version, and now the device sometimes seems really slow and hangs, but it might also be because I have changed the screen protector to a special anti-glare one.

Used it yesterday and the anti-glare is much better than the normal film and absolutely perfect to view in sun, but as it was cold the screen often wouldn't respond to my fingers and that was on the ground. This might be because I've not done a good job of replacing the screen and haven't plugged it all in properly or it might be the new screen guard.

To record tracklogs and submit to XCLEAGUE, use GPSDUMP for android at the same time as XCSOAR, but beware as GPSDUMP has to be manually edited before you save the file (as soon as you land), otherwise you get too many non flying trackpoints and the flight will not submit.

When using all the apps, the battery is not good enough for a realy long flight 5 hours plus) so have to use an extra battery, bu I've got one that is the same size so velcro's onto the back and then all sits on flightdeck as one.  In normal home use in the warm it lasts for 7 hours at least between charges (bluetooth off).  As a comparison againsta KOBO, costs a bit more, but no hassle with soldering, the screen is visible even though not anywher near as clear as a KOBO, and when you land you can download your track or check on train times as soon as you have an internet connection (I use a wifi broadband thingy).

[TVHGC Members] TVHGC Competition update

Great to see so many pilots at Combe yesterday, with some awesome triangles flown by the top pilots.  It would also be good to see a few more entries into the TVHGC Competition (http://www.tvhgc.co.uk/index.php/competitions) .  Yesterday would have been the perfect day to chase down some of the waypoints out front, but only Richard Bungay has sent in a tracklog so far, further extending his lead with the difficult to reach waypoints at Ham and Hungerford.  Come on folks!  Let’s get this comp going!  It’s open to all and is a great way of stretching your skills.  No need for fancy kit; just a basic GPS or kobo with XCSoar/LK8000 or the iphone app flyskyhy will suffice.  I’ll be happy to help with any questions.

Re: [TVHGC Members] Nexus 7

Hi

Been using a gen one then gen two Nexus 7 with a bluefly vario, works great but haven't tried it on a long XC yet. The flight deck on my Tanto light harness puts it pretty close to you and in sunlight I can see it ok if I look under my sunnies, I can see that it been further away or bigger glasses might be a issue.

Re: [TVHGC Members] Nexus 7

I tried it for a while Bluetoothed to a Bluefly vario but the screen was very difficult to read in the sunlight. Okish if you crank up the brightness to max but you're going to need an external battery to last.

Hi

Just a reminder.........

Don't forget that next Wednesday (01/04/15) we have a guest speaker at our social night - Neville Almond. He will be talking to us about Kobo/XC Soar, a topic which has been discussed in Skywings recently and I have seen questions and chatter on the forums.

The Swan will be open from 6.30pm for food & drinks. We look forward to seeing you all.

Re: [TVHGC Members] looking for a lift

Neil, I'll be driving from Oxford, getting to Combe by 9am. The only station I go near on your route will be Hungerford - if you can get there by 8:30 I can take you to launch.

Dave.

[TVHGC Members] Re: Paragliding Sicily

Hi

So, I would certainly recommend EtnaFly in Siciliy (based near Catania).
Very cheap accommodation with the family of Marco Busetta who knows the area very well and seems very happy to guide.
Flew every day with a very friendly group of local pilots despite an unfavourable forecast.
Would happily go back in summer.

[TVHGC Members] Big Fat Repack helpers

Hi,

I wanted to give big thank you  to all the people who helped out at yesterday’s  big Fat Repack with them the event could not happen.

Significant number of them travelled significant distances and are not even members of the club.

Best wishes,

The BFR Team

Re: [TVHGC Members] Lamb again

I've not tried myself as I don't have a dog, but surely whether your Labrador will fit on two shelves of a small upright freezer is highly dependent on the size of the Labrador?!  What about a Golden Retriever is that also comparable?  Also quite ironic that Martin (the) Butcher suggests that we refer to Tesco for meat prices!  ;0)

On a more serious matter, to second Alexander's comments about the BFR yesterday I would like to say a most sincere "Thank You!" to everyone who made it possible.  I for one am very much in your debt.  As number 21 in the queue for the zip wire on Sunday morning, I mulled over the fact that I've been meaning to go to one of these events for several years - indeed have flown with my Gin One reserve strapped under my derriere for 5 or more years - straight from the manufacturer and fitted by an experienced paragliding holiday guide.  But on Sunday despite my very best "pop, pull & throw" (all accomplished with great gusto within a second of being left to the law of gravity) my reserve hit the ground with a loud "Thump" and remained very neatly in its stowage back for the full duration of the ride.  It was blindingly evident that had I had cause to throw my reserve in anger at any time over the preceding 5 years then I would now, most probably, be dead!  Luckily for me, my simulated death happened at the RiverMead leisure centre and under the safe and watchful eye of the TVHGC.  After some analysis of the problem, it was found that a small loop of "excess" suspension line had wrapped itself around one of the rubber bands holding the lines neatly in place and had effectively "locked" it in place.  That parachute was never going to open.  The problem was resolved quickly and I got to take a second ride on the zip wire to make sure that the reserve worked as advertised.  It did and I took great care to ensure that when I repacked it, nothing was left to chance for next time!

For all of our members and subscribers to this group, I cannot over emphasise how much I recommend that you get yourself to the next re-pack if you haven't been to one yet!

I wanted to share my story with you all so that you can learn from my experience,

regards and safe flying to all,

Andy (Dead Man Walking) Tamlyn

I was spreading the word at the BFR that Bill Daw, who farms Rybury and Tan Hill, has just sent a small trailer full of lambs to the abattoir, and they will be hung and cut up by next weekend.  For those who do not know it, half a lamb direct from the farm is a leg, a shoulder, lots of chops, some stewing meat and mince.  It is not an absurdly bulky amount as a lamb is quite small, like a Labrador, and it easily fits into 2 shelves of a small upright freezer like mine.  Half a lamb is £65 - quite a lot cheaper than the supermarkets.

Direct sales like this, cutting out the numerous middlemen, are good for us and really good for the farmers.  It also helps Bill to see the club as made up of nice supportive people.  And his lamb is DELICIOUS.

Hi Frank, when i was using a 78s i had much more success connecting it to the computer (windows pc) using the old 4 pin serial connector on the back of the gps rather than the usb cable. I managed to download tracklogs and upload waypoints without problems. I think i might have an old one lying around at home which you're welcome too if i can find it.

I'll be at the BFR with my GPS, if that helps.

Re: [TVHGC Members] Garmin GPSmap 78 s

Is the 78 in Spanner mode?

Hi Frank, when i was using a 78s i had much more success connecting it to the computer (windows pc) using the old 4 pin serial connector on the back of the gps rather than the usb cable. I managed to download tracklogs and upload waypoints without problems. I think i might have an old one lying around at home which you're welcome too if i can find it.

I don't think the 78s works with GPSDump, Google to confirm. You're better off with a 76, i had to downgrade.

Despite updating the software to version 5.9, I am unable to write the TVHGC XC waypoints to my Garmin from GPS Dump via the USB interface. My Garmin does however interface to Garmin Basecamp on my PC (Microsoft Vista).  Can anyone help, please.

I'll be at the BFR with my GPS, if that helps.
