Re: [TVHGC Members] Big Fat Repack

Hi.

I would only suggest to consider repacking more then once a year. Especially if there is a lot of dump parawaiting during the year. Once a year is still better then some pilots I know.

Kind regards

RE: [TVHGC Members] TVHGC Reciprocal Agreements

I also agree with Francis, a big mistake to stop reciprocal arrangements.
Trump is also giving it a go so we will see just how successful he will be.
At least we have someone to compare the success rate with.

RE: [TVHGC Members] TVHGC Reciprocal Agreements

Sorry but I do agree with Francis, if anything we should post site rules on a notice board easily seen by all pilots as I am not entirely sure most members even read the sites rules for their club sites.
Combe Gibbet is probably the most overcrowded site we have with countless visiting pilots this has deterred me from flying on some occasions even so I would rather put up with that than loose reciprocal rights with other clubs which will surely happen.
For the record I do not recall seeing any incidents mentioned as all or most pilots I have spoken to on our sites have been responsible people wary of flying conditions and keen to get airtime when conditions allow.
The people causing the problems must surely be morons that have no affiliation with the flying fraternity?
Hence I find it difficult to understand how banning other club members helps the situation.

Please be assured this decision has not been taken lightly and I realise it may be unpopular with some members, but I ask you in this instance to consider the bigger picture.  If we were to lose key sites in TVHGC,  it could instantly overload sites of our neighbouring clubs and compound the situation still further.  This is not just bad for TVHGC, but for the whole paragliding/hang gliding community.

It is my sincere hope that with this move, we not only ensure everybody using the sites are members and know and respect the site rules, but that we restore a sense of belonging to Thames Valley with a collective sense of responsibility on TV sites.

Know your sites, and the site rules.  Refresh your memory before you fly or ask another member for a site brief.  Feel empowered to help and inform other pilots who you see breaking the rules.

Lastly,  have a great, safe and happy  2017 season.

[TVHGC Members] TVHGC Reciprocal Agreements

Dear TVHGC Members

Over the last years, our sites have been threatened many times by overcrowding and poor behaviour towards land owners and other land users.   The committee has worked hard on your behalf trying to improve this situation and make sure the sites remain open and available for you to fly whenever the weather is suitable.  The committee was hoping the situation would improve, but within the first few fledgling days of the cross country season we have seen more incidents on sites in full view of land owners and it must not continue.   When confronted, most pilots claim ignorance, have not read the site rules and are hardly ever identifiable as a member. In the most recent incident a pilot literally laughed in the face of a coach who was politely trying to educate them.

There have been multiple votes and a mandate over the years to remove the reciprocal agreements.  This was with the hope to improve the situation but no action was ever taken as we are well aware of the freedom this offers our community.  However, the committee now feel it is right and proper to consider, you, our members first with regards the use and preservation of our sites.

It is primarily for this reason that we are suspending the reciprocal agreements this year.

As of the 1st of April, ALL pilots using our sites will require a current TVHGC helmet sticker or TVHGC email stating proof of membership.

We will be restricting access to other TVHGC resources such as Facebook and Telegram to encourage full membership. We will also be monitoring the XC league and request the deletion of flights from our sites where the pilot is not a full member.

[TVHGC Members] Reserve Parachute Safety Lessons

Morning everyone,

I was going to try and write something meaningful to you all about the relationship between courtesy on the hill and flight safety after the mess on Milk Hill the other day, it always seems to be the beginning  of the year when everyone is mega keen to  get out flying, but I'll save that for later…. I also saw one  of our pilots take off with their reserve handle hanging out and I thought I'd share a couple of events I'd witnessed over the last few years.

I don't know how  often there are inadvertent reserve deployments after launch (please let me know if you've experienced one) but there must be a few as I've seen two in the short time I've been flying. Both ended without injury but in slightly different circumstances they could have been serious. The first was at a Spanish site where the pilot had pretty much flown through a bush on take-off, which then dragged his reserve handle, the second was purely as a result of not checking the security of the handle before launch. The reason why this can be a particularly dangerous scenario is because when your reserve deploys and you still have a perfectly functioning wing they set up together in a geometry that has a higher rate of descent than the reserve on its own. The wing literally drives you into the ground.

It's equally important that we can deploy our reserve  when we need to, which brings me on to the Big Fat Repack. The BFR is a function or facility provided by the Club to give our members the opportunity to practice throwing their reserve  and to get a supervised repack. Throwing  your reserve does two things, it gives you a practice to ensure your technique is sound and it gives you confidence that your  reserve  actually does the job it's designed  for. Each year we get one  or  two people  who have  difficulty throwing their reserve and they get some coaching  and a second chance, always with a better result. Scarily we also always have about 20% of  reserves with some sort  of fault, and scarily there are always a few that either  would not have deployed or  would have failed on deployment. Most of the faults are elastic band based but I also saw some reserves with completely open maillons and one with a chute that was older than the owner!

We usually get 100 or so out  of the 500 members who come along to the BFR, and I clearly hope that the other 400 are getting their reserve  repacked elsewhere. This year promises to  be better and slicker than ever. Waiting around time should be  reduced with 2 zip lines operating in turn, and your repack itself should be more closely supervised with advice readily at hand from the BHPA's expert team of  packers. There are still a few spaces left so please book up soon at www.bigfatrepack.org to guarantee your place. I almost forgot to mention, it's the Sunday after next, the 26th at the  Rivermead  Leisure Centre in Reading. I'll be there and look forward to seeing  you there too.

Please don't forget you can see all my other e-mails and random rants at www.justparagliding.uk

Cheers,

Nick Smith

Just returned from Dordogne/Charante after a very successful 10 days of winching and paramotoring. We have set up a tow site near Angouleme in th eheart of the plains where the site has yeilded 130km xc in smooth plains thermals. The site also allows paramotoring and there are several local clubs and schools operating there with a very friendly and welcoming attitude.

We will be going down again several times next year and individuals can go at any time to the family friendly hosts and enjoy a holiday that includes flying, or groups of pilots on a flying trip.

If ayone wants to see some of what we got up to ........................

I'm going down to Charante/Dordogne 19th Oct to 31st. Taking the winch and trying out a new site, with two 600m grass runways dedicated paragliding/paramotoring field. Place called Villebois. Staying at John Cooper's gite in Combiers. If anyone fancies a trail blazing trip to fly the plains and extend the season I have some places in the car. Travel cost would be £100 including ferry (overnight) and accommodation is 32.50 a night in a shared room, self catering or meals extra. No charge for the winching (except shared petrol to run it) as this is a setting-it-up trip. If it works we will be offering it as a flying holiday venue next year for individuals, groups and schools/guides. I was there in August and it was phenomenal with good lift every day from 10:30 onwards!! Flew every day for two weeks. Will also be taking paramotors and can offer paramotor conversion training during the 10 days we are there. Sorry no hang gliders this time as I am only experienced in PG winching. If you don't have a tow rating we can do your training and sign you off. Andy Shaw may use this venue for his Thermal Chasers and may join us later in the week if so he is a HG winchman. The venue is one hour from Dune de Pyla if you like that sort of thing.
