I entered the GWO this year in Ager - my first comp. It was amazing! There were 120 pilots from all over the world - all very friendly, and really helpful. I learned so much from Toby, Brett and the experienced pilots about all aspects of flying, weather, safety, attitude, instruments, technique, and having a blast - a very abundant atmosphere. I actually scored some points, completed some waypoints and didn't come last (95th I think). Now I'm addicted to comps :o)

Many pilots compete in order to find out whether or not to compete, and that's a perfectly valid reason. I did, and the answer was.... don't compete (except for the occasional fun comp ;-)

For any aspiring competition pilots, and especially for those pilots who think competitions are not for them, there’s an excellent article at the back of this month’s Skywings entitled “To compete – or not to compete?” If you don’t want to read the article, the answer is compete, but I suggest you read the article to find out why!

So, if you currently have a CP now is the time to get the books out, pass your Pilot exam in the spring, get some xc flying under your belt and join us in July! Most people who attend have never done it before and for about a third it's their first ever competition. The majority fly on EN B (DHV 1/2) wings.

In the months leading up to the competition I hope to organise training sessions with seasoned competition veterans to prepare us for the excitement to come. Subjects could include GPS use, how a comp works, how not to come last etc etc.

The competition I have in mind is the GIN Wide Open to be held in Tolmin in the beautiful Soča Valley in Slovenia from 4 to 11 July 2015. The reason for telling you about this now is that registration opens at 1pm on Boxing Day (26 December 2014) and there is a strict limit of 120 places allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration is free and is NOT a commitment to take part, but does get your foot in the door. "The GIN Wide Open is first and foremost a fun paragliding competition and flying event. Less about flying the latest hot-ships and more about achievable tasks. Less about winning and more about fun flying in a stress-free environment."

Re ALL pilots, the competition is open to those who have the FAI equivalent of a Pilot rating or above (IPPI 4 or above). So, if you currently have a CP now is the time to get the books out, pass your Pilot exam in the spring, get some xc flying under your belt and join us in July! Most people who attend have never done it before and for about a third it's their first ever competition. The majority fly on EN B (DHV 1/2) wings.

In the months leading up to the competition I hope to organise training sessions with seasoned competition veterans to prepare us for the excitement to come. Subjects could include GPS use, how a comp works, how not to come last etc etc.
